Heard the one about two skinny lads from Yorkshire ripping up the triathlon world? Probably. Since the start of 2012 these two have filled more column inches in the mainstream press than triathlon has ever seen.
So it’s fair to ask, what more can we possibly learn about the Brownlees? The answer is – to our pleasant surprise – quite a lot. It’s a credit to them both that they deliver a fast-paced, candid, enjoyable 239 pages that could as equally be devoured by a wide-eyed sporty teen as a hardcore endurance junkie.
Taking an alternating first-person approach (a neat device that showcases their differing personalities – one bristling with self-confidence, the other obsessive and doubt-ridden), the brothers give an honest reflection on their rise and rise from school cross-country to Olympic champions.
There’s the obligatory sprinkling of training tips, but this is no coaching manual. Instead it gives a glimpse of the mindset, dedication and love of sport required for elite performers to truly flourish, all in typically no-nonsense Yorkshire fashion.
